Description

The parka has been VERY well used since the 1980s, and is in pretty poor condition. It has with many visible repairs and discolored patches all over the parka. One of the oldest parkas available, it features a genuine coyote fur hood ruff, one of only 5 parkas we have which does, and the only one larger than size small.

Did you know that each Big Red used by the USAP program has a serial number written on the inside flap of one of the pockets? This serial number, used to help the program keep track of their gear, usually includes the parka size and the year it entered service.

This parka’s USAP serial number is: 87L050

Parka Sizing

The parkas are sized 2XS -4XL, and tend to run large due to the multiple layers worn underneath by Antarctic researchers in temperatures down to -100F. You can generally wear a size down (which will be more form-fitting) or a size up (which will be looser with more room for layering, as done at the South Pole).

Determine your parka size using Canada Goose’s sizing tool.

Parka Features

These parkas feature multi-layered down insulation, multiple pockets (both interior and exterior), wind skirt, and fur hood trim (Coyote fur or synthetic, depending on variation). There are also several Antarctic Program exclusive features not available on civilian parkas, including a square reflector on the back meant for use during the long Antarctic night, velcro for a name patch, and the official USAP chest patch replacing the Canada Goose logo, which reads “National Science Foundation / United States Antarctic Program”.

Parka Grades / Conditions

Each of our parkas receives a general grading classifying it as FairGood, or Very Good depending on the overall wear and fading of the parka, and will be priced accordingly. Our refurbishment process includes a detailed inspection for damage, professional repair of all major defects, dry cleaning if needed, and final inspection & conditioning. We guarantee that all parkas are 100% wearable and functional.

General Parka Classifications:

  • Fair – The parka may show color fading and obvious wear from service in Antarctica. Scuffs, stains, or small rips may be present, and there may be evidence of field repairs done by the Antarctic Program as well as one or more visible patches from our tailor. All major flaws have been fixed.
  • Good – The parka is in good condition, without major tears or damage, but may have general signs of wear, fading, visible (but not excessive) patches, repairs or minor stains/imperfections.
  • Very Good – The parka is in excellent condition, with minimal fading and minor signs of wear, and no major patches or signs of repair.

Each parka will also be given ‘pluses’ or ‘minuses’ which may further affect the price of the parka. These refer to details that deviate from the standard grading in any way without changing the parka’s classification. For example, a parka might have several small patches but is otherwise in excellent condition. It does not quite meet the standards we hold for our ‘Very Good’ condition parkas, but is much closer to a ‘Very Good’ than a ‘Good’. Therefore, we condition it as a Very Good (-) and the price will reflect that condition.
